Google Maps in South Africa are not good enough… yet

October 6th, 2009

The other day I was a bit surprised to see this on my iPhone while using Google maps.

googlemaps

The above area is a satellite/street map view available with the standard iPhone Google Maps application. With all the hoo-haa going on in the South Africa media about how Google are in the process of introducing street view I think they should first focus on accurate maps of common areas.

If you look at the image above I have indicated how the roads look now, which you can obviously see on the satellite view. What you are looking at is Sunninghill and what Google Maps is offering me in the street map view is how Sunninghill looked about 3 years ago.

As far as I am concerned Google should first rectify the many problems with their standard street map view before trying to offer anything new to South African users. Another common error are incorrect street names in street view with Google Maps on the iPhone. I know South African road names change faster than necessary, and I am more than certain Google are capable with keeping up. I just have a distinct feeling, as a third world country(South Africa), desperately trying to be more than that, international companies don’t give us the attention we deserve in the offerings they do give us.

Another sore point for any South African is X-Box Live.
