How Apple can improve the UX of their iPhone… slightly :P

I have had an iPhone now for almost a year and overall I think it is the best smart phone I have used. Sure it has its set of issues like any device of this nature however if one thing pisses me off about the iPhone it is how they have seperate buttons for your email and your sms’s.

I have thought about this and below is my suggestion to resolve this, because as far as I am concerned, on the phone, an SMS is the same as an MMS which is the same as an Email.

Above is my suggestions. Rather an all encompassing icon labelled messages that will then show you all your email accounts and sms messages. In addition to this, all-in-one message centre you would gain an additional spot on your iPhone quick launch bar to put another application there. In this example the iPod application.

For those of you interested, if you Jailbrake your iPhone, there is an app that allows for 5 icons at the bottom of the task bar which seems to work pretty well. Maybe Apple should looks at things like this before they release another over glorified update.

Today I had the exquisite pleasure to get to look through this thing:

Above is the Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic or to us normal folk a farking huge telescope.

The thing about this big monster that can see into deep space in the right conditions, is that it will turn you into an astronomy enthusiast the moment you get a few hours with this telescope.

Below is a picture taken by the owner of the telescope (Unbelievably the picture was taken with a Samsung D900i cellphone pointing into the eye piece ) . Still beautiful!!!

Helvetica – the movie

helvetica

I watched a documentary the other day entitled: Helvetica. In short it is a documentary about the font Helvetica and it’s history, impact and meaning to the design industry. There is a lot of bonus material with in depth insights from the likes of David Carson and Neville Brody.

If you are not a designer you may find the documentary somewhat dull and fail to appreciate the rich content it contains and some interesting facts about the font.  From my perspective as a digital designer I have always seen the value of classic fonts as usability and legibility will be high requirements for any digital design… well almost any… :)

The documentary is somewhat surprising in revealing just how significant helvetica as a font is in the design industry… even to this day.

Create a favicon for your wordpress website in seconds

favion

I was chatting to a friend the other day when she pointed out to me a useful little site to create a favicon for your website.

If you confused as to what a ‘favicon’ is, it is the little icon that represents a websites when you bookmark it as a favourite in your web browser.

Here is a visual example to be painfully obvious:

How did I do this?

I went to this (favicon.cc -  free favicon generator)  website:
Then I followed these instructions (if you want to apply it to your current wordpress theme)
And I was done. :)

neuromance digital design portfolio and new icons

Lately I have been tinkering under the hood of many discarded flash experiments and have been putting together what I hope will be an adequate replacement to the “projects” area of  Neuromance.co.za. While putting together this digital portfolio I have had the time to reuse and perfect a lot of old AS2.0 code snippets I had to create I think is an incredibly elegant action script solution for a dynamic portfolio.

I am not entirely sure when this will be completed however you can take a sneak peak at what I am working on here

It was while designing for the shell of my portfolio that I was struck with the idea of using iconagraphy. Typical to me when a good idea hits I decided to investigate the icon idea further and have created a side prohect with that and below is a sample of some of the work. This work has been watermarked as I hope to sell it to buy something shiny…. one day.
