iPhone 3g OS3.0 Review

So by now most iPhone users would have updated to the new operating system for Apple’s mobile phone the iPhone.

For weeks Apple’s website has been displaying what this new update will give the iPhone user (for free). The iPhone community has been abuzz with news of the new iPhone 3Gs and OS3.0 and I must say. What a load of over-hyped shit.

The main additions to the iPhone 3G, when you install OS3.0 are:

  • Spotlight Search (Great new addition)
  • Copy n Paste (Should have been there from the start)
  • Landscape Keyboard almost anywhere (This is dependent on whether an app is OS3.0 compliant or not)
  • Modem Tethering (Have yet to test this, but useful)
  • MMS (This should have been there from the start)

There are many updates that you stumble upon as you explore the phone. A few additions which were much needed is the ability to delete multiple messages or images.  There is a new voice recorder which I think was included to work in conjunction with MMS, should you wish to send a voice recording.

From what I have read online you cannot video record on the iPhone 3G and the new OS3.0 will not give you this functionality. This functionality is only available for the iPhone 3Gs which sports a faster internal processor. You can jailbreak your iPhone 3G and use some free apps out there to video record, however the quality is terrible.

I am sure we are going to see a wave of new and exciting iPhone apps (which is where most of the work went in with OS3.0). I am curious to see if we are going to see a trend of iPhone 3Gs apps only.

Most of these ‘features’ are obvious evolutions and refinements, but I could not shake the feeling that Apple went overboard this time with their marketing. Simple features that were advertised in typical Apple style which in my eyes are not new additions, but simply oversights on Apple’s behalf.

Overall I am happy with the new update and it seemingly has made my iPhone a little snappier and responsive.  If I come across any perculiar experiences or problems I will be sure to include an update.
