Glow in the dark animals – Seriously, glow-in-the-dark pigs, cats and now dogs.

April 28th, 2009

It occurred to me tonight.

We live in an age where if you type in “glow in the dark animal” in google images, you actually find a myriad of legitimate images pertaining to the search. I never imagined a glow in the dark animal just for the sake of imagining one let alone one actually being made.

These thoughts and research arose while I was surfing through the news online, dodging all the stories about the Swin Flu, when I stumbled on this:

South Korean scientists have engineered four Beagle dogs that glow red using cloning techniques that could help develop cures for human diseases.

I am not sure how many of you may remember the glow in the dark pig?

Can you imagine my surprise when I spot this new addition?

And then imagine my surprise when I start googling glow in the dark animals.

glow in the dark cats

Our world is changing…  and my next pet may just glow in the dark.. and out of curiosity sake.

Why don’t plastic light switches glow in the dark?

    @Jenna
    Don’t know if anyone will read this but the really really basic gist of it is that they insert jellyfish DNA into the genome of *insert animal here* which will then cause it to produce the protein that makes them glow. It was originally developed to track how certain proteins moved through the body of the subject (attaching it to the DNA that codes for X protein will make it so that the glow gene will be attached to it, then the researchers can track it really easily.)

      Hello Jenna,

      I know nothing about how or why they make animals glow. Sorry.
