Mobile Industry Embraces Universal Phone Charger

Universal charger

Well at least according to this blog the mobile industry is going to embrace a single recharging device. Mobile handset manufacturers are planning to use mini-USB ports by the 1st of Jan 20012, which does make sense and I do support it.

Apparently it will bring the cost of manufacture down, however I doubt we will ever see or feel the benefit as the end consumer except that we will have to buy our manufacturer approved re-charger separately.

I failed to see Sony-Ericsson & Samsung among the mix of the “Mobile Industry”, which makes me wonder just how much of a standard it will become.

Apple obviously have their own propriety connection which is not going to change any time soon, with massive amounts of accessories being made available daily. Think docking-stations.

It is also fair to mention that with an iPhone USB cable you can plug it into an iPod and vice versa. Perhaps the world should adopt Apple’s standards. :p

It would be interesting to see if we were to adopt one standard for other electric items, and not just mobile chargers. Imagine all laptops use the same kind of charger. Imagine all electric devices used the same plugs and plug sockets.

I can understand that it would be near impossible doing this, however it would certainly cut down on a lot of unneeded frustration, certainly cost and I imagine “green” being the buzzword of the century it offers that value somewhere too. Apple seem to do it.
